NEWS

  • NewsBank brings remote access to the Observer-Reporter and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: that means that if you are visiting our library, a simple click on a link allows you to read the newspapers. To read from home, ask our library staff for the secret password. The link is posted on our "Links" web page.
  • High School Students! Stop by our place to check out books which your school librarian (Mrs. Bennett) loaned to us this summer. The collection is Young Adult nominees for the 2011 PA Young Reader's Choice contest, sponsored by the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association (PSLA). In the fall, the books will return to the high school for your reading pleasure. In late February, Cal High readers will select their favorite title from the collection, sending one collective vote to PSLA.
  • HEROES -- Please, take a seat at our table. For just $60 a plate, you and your friends can have a blast and become a library hero. For a third consecutive year, the  Peacock, Keller & Ecker law firm will sponsor a 6 p.m. September 22 fundraising dinner at Bella Sera restaurant in Canonsburg. "Off the Shelf" proceeds benefit the One Card project for sixteen public libraries in Washington/Greene County. Author and journalist Dave Crawley,of KDKA-TV, is celebrity chairman/keynote speaker. Participants may either buy a seat at a table or buy up a table for ten and choose their own "literary hero" theme with which to decorate the table. This truly enjoyable evening will feature great prizes in addition to delicious food and high-spirited highjinks. Our library hopes to fill a table or two (at least) and we will happily accept donations for the silent auction or door prizes. Give us a call to join in the fun: 724-938-2907. See a complete story in the May issue of California Focus or visit www.offtheshelf.info.

  • © BE A VERIZON VELOCITY DONOR-- The code for California Area Public Library is 50300.  When you order a qualifying product, we will receive an impressive donation from Verizon; proceeds will be directed toward our weekly Preschool Story Time. Customers in Pennsylvania and Delaware who call 1-888-345-7544 when ordering select Verizon products simply provide code 50300 to the Verizon representative. The program is simple: non-profits (such as us) earn donations when their supporters purchase qualifying residential Verizon products. The library earns $25 from your FIOS© internet or high speed internet order, $20 from your FiOS©TV or DirectTV order, and $10 on select phone service orders. See verizon.com/velocity for further details.
  • FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY -- Congratulations to Irene Zopetti, president; Hildred Folmar, vice president; and Renee Carlisle, secretary. These faithful friends of the library have volunteered to restore the Friends charity to its former levels of vim and vigor--all they ask is that you, dear reader, lend a hand by attending fundraising events or donating goods, services and ideas (elbow grease welcomed, of course). Ask our library staff when the Friends plan to meet next.
  • CARD CLUB -- Space is limited, so make reservations soon for a $6 table in our card club. Tables will be open for Bridge, 500 and Euchre. The snack tables always feature scrumptious delights!
  • BOARD MEETING -- The Library's Trustees will meet on June 15. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:15 p.m. in the library. Claudia Bennett is current Board president. Linda Wohar is vice-president, Amelia Mitchell is treasurer, Candice Treser is secretary and Jeannine Metal is a member.

  • LIBRARY HISTORY

In 1935, forty Federation Club women decided to justify their existence as a civic group by organizing a public library. They rented an empty storeroom in the Parinello building on Third Street, fixed it up, found books, and at 2:00 on the last Saturday of May, opened the doors of California Public Library...Click Here for full story

© Before You Plant: Please stop by the library to purchase our LITTON GIFT CERTIFICATES before you visit that favorite local greenhouse, located on Route 40 in Richeyville.
