Wyona S. Coleman March 23, 1932 - November 29, 2005 Environmentalist and Cornerstone of California Public Library
On December 3, one hundred and seven people attended a memorial service for Wyona S. Coleman, held in the baggage room of California Public Library. We feel her loss keenly, but it was a great comfort to see gathered in one place so many of those whose lives Wyona touched during her varied endeavors. In 1976 Wyona helped to convert "the baggage room" from a dusty storeroom into a spacious community room and children's library. Shortly after Wyona and Phil Coleman moved their family to California in the mid-1960s, Wyona became a champion for the library, eventually choosing to earn an MLS degree to better serve the needs of the library, a job she held until her retirement in 2000. At the time of her death, Wyona was president of CPL's Board of Trustees and vice-president of Friends of the Library. Repairs to the library's tile roof, a project for which Wyona recently wrote a grant, were completed on December 2. Wyona's family and library friends are deeply touched by the generosity of those who have bestowed upon the library memorial donations. For as long as the collection she helped to build remains intact, Wyona's intelligent spirit will remain in California, Pennsylvania.
